Shaktydome

Shaktydome Artist center in South France

Constructed in 1988 by  Chuck Carron, shaktydome is situated  in the beautiful Pyrénées mountains ,  heart of Cathar Country. The structure is a classic 4iko geodesic dome thirty feet (11mtres ) high  and fourty five feet (15mtres) in diameter, there is a small dome used as guest house and large organic garden and orchard, two small ponds and a waterfall! Shaktydome is a spirit base which has received Yoga masters, shamen, druides, American Indian groups, Vedic feasts and festivals, and  talented creative artists and musicians, also providing artisic, nutrition, vegetarian, and inner rhythm seminars on a non profit basis for eighteen years!

Medicine Architecture-   We have adapted  ourselves to living in aggressive personal environments,  square structures are extremely rare in nature, round structures provide a harmonious equal  distribution of energy whereas square structures reflect, echo, and bounce energy, add eletro-magnetic  fields, microwave pollution,ect.. blocking our natural energy flow, creating physical and mental  disturbance and illness, the result is  quite a negative living environment!

Richard Buckminster Fuller.

Richard Buckminster Fuller was born July 12, 1895, in Milton, Massachusetts. He entered Harvard University in 1913 but was expelled two years later. In 1917, he married Anne Hewlett and formed a construction company. In 1923, Fuller invented the stockade brick-laying method—bricks with vertical holes reinforced with concrete. In 1927 he designed a factory-assembled Dymaxion house, a self-contained unit suspended from a central mast with a complete recycling system. Dymaxion was a term he used for anything deriving maximum output from minimum input. Fuller also designed a Dymaxion car—an omnidirectional vehicle that gave minimum wind resistance—in 1928. This vehicle could seat 12, make 180° turns, run easily at 120 mph (193 kmph), and average 28 mi/gal (12 km/I) but was unprofitable because automobile manufacturers wouldn't mass produce it.

Fuller's financial break came in 1940 with his Dymaxion Deployment Unit (DDUj, a circular self-cooled living unit with pie-shaped, corrugated steel rooms. The British used DDUs in World War II. In 1949, Fuller started work on geodesic domes. He applied for a patent in 1951 and received a contract in 1953 from Ford Motor Company to build a dome over their head-quarters' courtyard in Detroit. The U.S. Defense Department became Fuller's largest customer, using domes as temporary housing units and to protect radar equipment from harsh environments.

At the time of his death in 1983, Fuller's domes were used worldwide. In 1985, fullerene was discovered. Fullerenes are carbon atoms arranged in sphere-like shapes with pentagonal and hexagonal faces, similar to geodesic domes. These "bucky balls" have up to 980 carbon atoms.

Sacred Geometry-- term covering Pythagorean geometry and neo-Platonic geometry, as well as the perceived relationships between organic curves and logarithmic curves, various attributes to the Platonic solids and to certain geometrically-derived ratios, investing them with "meaning";for example, the cube symbolized kingship and earthly foundations, the pentagon and its mystic energy. Living in geodesic dome structures for the past twenty years has certainly changed my life!

Living in  dome structures is without a doubt a harmonious experience,  providing an equal distribution  of energy; it is a structure easy to heat and in perfect balance with  natural human energy. Unlike square aggressive strutures which are rarely found in nature domes provide a natural fluide energy flow which does not work against human creative energy flow!

Domes are perfect for all creative activities such as painting, yoga, meditation, harmonisation, and music, you lose no natural flow of energy in domes unlike square structures which are reflective, echo energy, and exhaust energy.

                 Sacred Geometry

Not too long ago, mankind lived a simple life in harmony with nature. Modern lifestyles and the population explosion snatched that peace from us and left us trying to increase production.  Technology has thankfully shrunken our world to the extent that we can no longer ignore the plight of our neighbors and has given us the means by which we can take care of each other better. We must do that. There is really no other option. Much of the world’s housing problems are solved by utilizing EcoShells and domes. Domes are nature's perfect structure and provide a unique and functional space for every use!

The geodesic dome is able to cover more space without internal supports than any other enclosure. It becomes proportionally lighter and stronger the larger it is. The geodesic dome is a breakthrough in shelter, not only in cost-effectiveness, but in ease of construction and energy efficiency. The geometry allows proper circulation of the ambient air with little energy input.

Imagine yourself living in a highly structured space replicating the fundamental geometry of creation—the same geometry at the root of heavenly spheres and of the molecules of your body. Healers use the dome because they believe that geometry helps reorganize the cells of the body and hence improve health and creativity! .

The ultimate geometry of creation is the sphere—ie., atoms, molecules, the earth, the sun and the stars etc. All these spheres mathematically generate a point of singularity at the center where all waves cancel out to create stillness—the Bindu point of ancient meditation practice. Although the dome is a hemisphere, it emulates these dynamics. Many meditators use the domes to enhance their practice with great success. Similarly, because of these spherical coordinates the acoustics inside the dome are phenomenal and exquisite. Chanting at the point of singularity in the center of the dome generates the effect of hearing yourself from within. Many musicians enjoy the dome for practice and performing.

Th e sphere uses the "doing more with less" principle in that it encloses the largest volume of interior space with the least amount of surface area thus saving on materials and cost!            Spherical structure of a dome is one of the most efficient interior atmospheres for human dwellings because air and energy are allowed to circulate without obstruction. This enables heating and cooling to occur naturally. Geodesic shelters have been built all around the world in different climates and temperatures and still they have proven to be the most efficient human shelter one can find.

More specifically, the dome is energy

  efficient for many reasons:

  1. its decreased surface area requires less building materials.
  2. exposure to cold in the winter and heat in the summer is decreased because, being spherical, there is the least surface area per unity of volume per structure.
  3. the concave interior creates a natural airflow that allows the hot or cool air to flow evenly throughout the dome with the help of return air ducts.
  4. extreme wind turbulence is lessened because the winds that contribute to heat loss flow smoothly around the dome.
  5. it acts like a type of giant down-pointing headlight reflector and reflects and concentrates interior heat. This helps prevent radiant heat loss.

The net annual energy savings for a dome owner is 30% less than normal rectilinear .

And what exactly is a geodesic dome?  A geodesic dome is a type of structure shaped like a piece of a sphere or a ball. This structure is comprised of a complex network of triangles that form a roughly spherical surface. The more complex the network of triangles, the more closely the dome approximates the shape of a true sphere .

By using triangles of various sizes, a sphere can be symmetrically divided by thirty-one great circles. A great circle is the largest circle that can be drawn around a sphere, like the lines of latitude [ED: he means longitude] around the earth, or the equator. Each of these lines divide the sphere into two halves, hence the term geodesic, which is from the Latin meaning ``Earth dividing.''

DOMES HAVE VARIOUS FREQUENCIES

Geodesic spheres and domes come in various frequencies. The frequency
of a dome relates to the number of smaller triangles into which it is
subdivided. A high frequency dome has more triangular components and
is more smoothly curved and sphere-like. If your web browser is
Java-enabled, you can interact with the exhibit on Frequency at right.

DOMES RELATE TO SPHERE PACKING

Fuller realized that spheres packed around a nuclear sphere in
successive layers give a cuboctahedral shape, which may be distorted
into an icosahedron or octahedron via what he called the jitterbug
transformation.

The network of rods between adjacent spheres in a hollow icosahedral
packing gives the framework for the classic geodesic sphere. Geodesic
domes may also be based on other polyhedra, such as the octahedron and
tetrahedron.

DOMES COME IN CLASSES

The classic geodesic sphere is composed of 20 curved triangles, each
of which corresponds to one facet of the icosahedron, a 20-faceted
polyhedron. Each of the 20 triangles is curved because it is
subdivided into smaller triangles, the corners of which are all pushed
out to a constant distance from the sphere's center. The pattern used
for this subdividing into smaller triangles is used to classify domes
into classes I, II and III.

Geodesic domes are fractional parts of complete geodesic spheres.
Actual structures range from less than 5% to 100% (a full sphere). The
Spaceship Earth Pavilion constructed by Tishman Construction for AT&T
at Disney's Epcot is the best-known example of a full sphere.
